Bureaucratic Blunder: Venkatesh Kamath's Fight for PPF Justice

Mr. Venkatesh Kamath of Karkala, a senior citizen and head of a Hindu undivided family (HUF), opened a Family Public Provident Fund (PPF) account in 2001, unaware of a 2005 rule prohibiting family PPF accounts. Despite this rule, local postal authorities extended his account in 2016 and 2021, continuing to accept contributions and pay interest. In 2023, Kamath was abruptly instructed to close his account and return the interest earned post-2016. Seeking justice, Kamath approached the Human Rights Protection Foundation and filed a complaint with the Consumer Commission, Udupi. This case highlights systemic issues in the implementation and communication of financial regulations that ultimately forces common citizens to make several unnecessary rounds to the court.
