Manohara, who secured a forest guard job on compassionate grounds, was seriously injured by poachers while on duty in Kodagu. Initially treated at a small hospital in Kerala, he was later shifted to Unity Hospital in Mangaluru for emergency surgery. The medical expenses were overwhelming for his impoverished family. After making only a minimal contribution, the Forest Department abandoned him, forcing the family to raise money through loans and by mortgaging their home. Eventually, they had to bring Manohara home despite his critical condition, as they could no longer afford treatment.
At this desperate point, the Basrur Consumers’ Forum intervened. Dr. Ravindranath Shanbhag, the forum’s convener, mobilized public support by highlighting the injustice in a local newspaper. This led to an outpouring of public and financial support, enabling Manohara’s admission to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. With proper care, his health improved, and he gradually recovered enough to walk with the help of crutches.
In a shocking move, the Forest Department falsely accused Manohara of aiding poachers and attempting suicide and denied him further support on the grounds of his short tenure. The Forum countered these accusations with strong evidence, ultimately convincing the court of Manohara’s innocence. The court directed the Department to cover his medical expenses and reinstate him in a suitable office position due to his disability.
